Hello members,

I would like to seek your help in just sparing a few minutes to share your thoughts:

"What can be the best (innovative) business that can be started - with a space of 1800 sq.ft - in a Very Busy locality that is the major place for Shopping/renting/anything and everything can be found here and is the center of the city. Wanted to know if something innovative could be started..."

This is NOT for me, but for my friend who is really looking to start something. I suggested a Play school! But it did not appeal to her! I also suggested a fashion boutique - but there are already shops in the area. Is there something you can help me with? :-) Would like to seek your creative thoughts.

Dear Mathew,

I believe that your friend should conduct a thorough analysis of her interests, passions, and sources of satisfaction. Otherwise, things may go awry in the future.

In my training firm, we often refer to this process as discovering one's motivated skills. If either you or she would like to, please feel free to contact me at +91 974 248 1922.

Dear Asha Mathew,

Your friend needs to analyze in which part your friend is an expert and start a business in that path (known devil is better than unknown angel). So, we need to choose a business and then proceed to select the location. This is a better way to start a business.

All the best for your friend's upcoming business.

Dear Asha,

Please ask her to introspect on her inclinations. Determine what interests her the most and conduct a feasibility check in terms of resources, required manpower, advertising costs, etc. If she has good knowledge of the arts, you could suggest that she consider opening an arts gallery, an art corner, or a handicrafts shop. Additionally, she could get involved with an NGO and showcase their products, or open a shop offering wellness services and products. If her interest lies in working with children, she might want to consider starting a daycare center or a hobby cum activity center.

This is all I could think of for now!

Hi,

The suggestion of a beauty parlour is good. However, as you have mentioned that there are already a lot of beauty parlours, you could consider starting a training centre for beauticians. It is the only industry that is growing rapidly in the current recession scenario, and there is a high demand for trained manpower in beauty parlours throughout the state. I am aware of this as we are involved in training and placing these beauticians in Chennai.

Dear Asha,

I saw your post and the responses. As some have suggested, the first thing your friend has to do is list what she wants to do with her life from the most satisfying to least. Then do a survey of what is already being served by others in the geographical area and where there is a gap. In effect, conduct a SWOT analysis (her own strengths and weaknesses and Opportunities and Threats).

It will be presumptuous on our part to suggest ideas without knowing the situation, as one can see from the responses above and your answers. Am I correct in assuming that your friend wants to make money and not just serve society?

Have a nice day.

Thank you for your views, Sir.

Yes, you are partly correct. She is interested in making money but linked with serving society. The simple reason that can explain it all together is this portion of land is available in the front area of her house, so she wants to start something that will not spoil the family name's image and also make money. Because this space will generate a significant business in the area where she is staying.

As someone pointed out above, renting was in her mind, but the question remains: renting for what?

In that case, she could go for an accessories shop with all kinds of silver and designer jewelry. She can add fancy ladies' handbags, perfumes, and a few antiques. Trust me, Asha, if you open such a kind of shop even in the desert, girls will go hunting there as well.

One business that can never fail is the food business. Your friend can consider starting a fast food corner offering items such as Chaat, Tikki, Dosa, Burger, Golgappe, or a variety of foods. Home delivery services would be an added advantage that you could provide. Depending on the budget, your friend can make a choice. Some of the space can be utilized for women's items like handbags, jewelry, and cosmetics.

An exclusive idea I can share here is that if there are several boutiques in the area, your friend could differentiate by starting a simple shop specializing in designer laces, buttons, and clothing accessories. While this may sound unusual, I am located in Chandigarh where such a shop exists, and the response has been tremendous because not many think to start such a small yet profitable business.

Furthermore, this venture does not require significant investment, but quality products are essential. The strategic location you mentioned would be an added advantage. Once established, you can expand the business further. I hope this information is helpful.

Dear Asha,

The first thing she should do is understand what she is truly interested in. People may come up with numerous suggestions; however, she needs to decide first which business she wants to enter and then ask for creative suggestions to make that place appealing and attractive to the crowd. Otherwise, there are many people with a plethora of ideas about starting a new venture, ready to invest but struggling to find attractive locations to begin. She can also seek out those individuals, understand their business concepts, and rent out spaces to them after ensuring that it does not tarnish the family name. Unless one engages in illegal activities, the business preserves dignity and the family name remains intact. Therefore, she must decide on her direction.

All the best.

Hi Ash,

This is my thought to start this business, but due to a lack of funds, I had postponed this idea. Anyways, this may help your friend.

BUSINESS IS SOMETHING WHERE YOU SERVE THE COMMUNITY WHAT THEY WANT...... (IT'S AN OLD WAY OF DOING BUSINESS)

NEW MANTRA..... GENERATE THE NEED FOR YOUR SERVICE AND SERVE THE COMMUNITY IN WHAT YOU ARE GOOD AT SERVING...

We all know that now the trend is that everyone wants to be fit and active. So, the business of a GYM is in a booming stage. But what is creative in this... read further...

You have seen GYMs for males, females, or both, but what is the average age of customers... it starts from 18 years old till 60-65 years old. RIGHT...

Leave this age group... start a GYM for KIDS for the age group of 4-8 years old. This is not a babysitting activity. This will include a playing platform for kids.

Now why this will be a good business:

1. You are the only one to serve this.

2. Normally nowadays, both husbands and wives are working, so they can't provide proper attention to kids.

3. Kids will be more active due to physical work.

4. Keep it open in the evening so that more parents can drop their kids and finish their work at home.

5. No TV or video game addiction will be there for kids. (which is good)

OK, If you require any further help, contact me.... Best of Luck...

With the upcoming festive seasons in mind, she can definitely go for fancy items like imitation jewelry, bangles, hairbands, chudi materials, and designer sarees. All these items carry a very good margin. But, before venturing into this business, it is better to visit Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Surat & Mumbai to understand designs, quality, prices, etc. After that, you can purchase them from your local wholesaler.

Hi,

Well, my suggestion is that you can open a cyber cafe but with a difference. You can have a coffee shop plus a cyber cafe (internet center). This way, people can have their coffee and snacks while using the internet for various purposes. The cyber cafe should be open without any walls or cubicles so that you can utilize the space to the fullest. You can consider putting glass outer walls as well.

As you mentioned it's in the center of the city and a busy area, this should work out well. Let me know if you like the idea.

Best of luck,
Sonu :)

Dear Ash,

As my friend said, you can actually start a good restaurant because that is the least risky business these days. Also, a garment retail store with some sort of differentiation would be a better idea (as I know in this field the profit margins will be higher), but I don't have any idea about the area you are in. Think before you act and make a wise decision. All the best.

Dear Ash Matthew,

The location of your home-based business is extremely important as well. You may not even be able to start the home-based business you want at your current location due to issues such as space and zoning. Before starting a home-based business, you need to consider the suitability of your neighborhood and house.

Zoning - Is your neighborhood zoned for home-based businesses? If it's not, you're just asking for trouble down the road when the city catches up with you or a neighbor complains. Many municipalities do not allow home-based businesses at all, and others impose severe restrictions on what type of business can operate out of a family dwelling in a residential neighborhood. Check the zoning bylaws with your municipality.

Neighborhood Suitability - How will your proposed home-based business fit into your neighborhood? Most residential neighbors will not appreciate noisy machinery running all day, large trucks starting early in the morning, or customers parking all over the place. If your business involves manufacturing or frequent vehicle traffic, operating in a residential area may not be suitable. Unhappy neighbors can negatively impact your business in various ways.

Neighborhood Location - Will your neighborhood's location support or hinder your home-based business? If you are delivering a product or service, the distance from town may not matter much, except for additional travel costs. However, if your business requires clients to come to you, accessibility is crucial. In many cases, you may not be allowed to display signage for your home-based business, though some areas permit small, discreet signs near your door.

I suggest starting your own HR consultancy or real estate business, which could be a good fit. I hope this information is helpful. All the best.

A few years ago, some partners and I opened a game room that consisted of Xbox, PS2, and GameCube consoles networked together and Internet connected. People came in and played by the hour or day. We hosted gaming tournaments, lock-ins, etc., and were fairly successful. If the location has as much traffic as it seems, it would probably work even better.

Dear Ash,

I can suggest many business ideas such as a restaurant, play zone, salon, garment shop, etc. However, the following factors need to be analyzed first:

A- Nature of mass expenditure,
B- Parking space availability,
C- Number of visitors in surrounding markets,
D- Innovative idea capability of your friend,
E- Budget for investment. (If you consider McDonald's, it would be a costly investment if the location is in the main city where people prefer local food brands.)

If you provide complete details of your project, we will assist you and submit a comprehensive project report with innovative business ideas.

Dear Asha,

It is always very delightful to read and explore your contents posted on citehr.com. I, along with some of my IIT friends, are working on 'Project Upkaran' (Upkaran is a Hindi word for Equipment). The concept is to provide farmers with equipment and other resources required for healthy crops that they are willing to cultivate. The project 'Upkaran' will tie up with a major corporate or industrial house and, as an element of CSR activity, will provide this equipment, pesticides, seeds, bore wells, fertilizers, etc.

Since the project is in the prototype stage, we have sent the recommendations to Mr. Sam Pitrodia, Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, and the Ministry of Planning for further processing. Asha, I believe that similar projects can be cultivated and developed for further growth and launch. Kindly provide me with your valuable guidance and remarks on this issue.

Hi,

First, ask your friend to analyze the vicinity of that place. Which business would thrive? Please keep in mind that your investment should align with your budget.

I would suggest opening a "Playstation" or a "Consultancy firm," a health parlor for both men and women, or a small software institution. If you prefer a health parlor, you can also include a small fashion designing section and offer fancy items for both men and women.

It might be beneficial to consider establishing a fitness center for both men and women, along with offering organic fruit juices. I believe this combination could be successful.

You can start a good non-veg restaurant which has normal non-veg foods like chicken and mutton. Apart from that, you can provide some rare non-veg varieties like rabbit, turkey (a kind of chicken), and many more varieties which taste very good. Outside the restaurant, you can offer chat items. This will provide an additional source of income. Anyway, all the best for whatever business you decide to start.

Dear Ash,

It may not be appropriate for us to suggest, as there is a process one has to follow to choose the right business. Please conduct a survey to identify what may be lacking and what most customers are looking for. Sometimes, a business may exist but not be sufficient to meet all needs. Through the study, we will determine the purchasing potential of customers so that we can plan for a white goods shop.

I assume her residence is near a corporate area. I would like to suggest opening a TW or car servicing gallery in partnership with a leading car brand (company name not specifically mentioned, but you are smart enough to guess!). That’s right! 1800 sqft is a big enough garage to start a business. She will benefit from the rent from the property as well as a share in profits if it is a company-leased garage. It will increase her social interaction and also bring in money.

I would also request mentioning the city name as it will help suggesters direct their views.
