Dear All,
Our establishment is in the Hotel industry and will be covered under the Shops & Establishment Act. Now, which minimum wages does it apply to - Shops & Commercial Establishments or Hotels, Restaurants, and Eating Houses? If it pertains to Hotels, Restaurants, and Eating Houses, can anyone send me the minimum wage applicable as of 01.04.2009? If you have the soft copy of the gazette, could you please attach it.
Thank you.

Sir,
The minimum wage notifications are different for each state as they are issued by the respective state governments. Firstly, you need to mention which city/state you belong to in order to address the requirement.
Thank you.

Hi,
Can anyone let me know what actually the "Minimum Wages Act" is and for whom this act is covered? Are doctors, engineers, software professionals, school and college principals, deans, IT and ITES/BPO employees, computer operators, data entry operators, data conversion technicians, rickshaw pullers, cart pullers, bus drivers, and conductors covered by this act? Is this act applicable only to rural areas or also to urban areas? Why was this act formulated, and how is the calculation done? Have there been any major changes made to this act in the current year? What are the benefits to the common people from this act?
Thank you.

Dear Friend,
To understand minimum wages, you must comprehend basic concepts in wages. It is challenging to explain here, but I suggest you read articles on three areas:
1. Living Wage
2. Minimum Wage
3. Fair Wage
It is the objective of any government to elevate society to what is known as a fair wage level. In underdeveloped economies, we encounter bare sustainable wage levels. This implies that the wage paid should be sufficient to afford food, basic clothing, and minimal accommodation.
Fair wages will not only cover bare sustainable wages but will also strive to enhance the standard of living. The quality of life is crucial.
When countries transition from underdeveloped to developing, wages cannot be abruptly raised to fair levels. It becomes the government's responsibility to gradually increase wages to a reasonable level, termed minimum wages.
This explanation provides you with a fundamental theoretical understanding and does not delve into technical issues. Against this backdrop, if you read some articles and review old Supreme Court judgments from the 1960s, you will gain a better grasp of the concept.
